Meeting on Monday 14th January

Hello everyone

Our meeting on Monday includes the annual Tale of Two Members. This year we have Margaret Bentley and Debbie Eyre sharing their lives in stitch. These sessions are always interesting and definitely a good way to find out more about our members if you feel you don't yet know everyone. Here's a couple of images to whet your appetite for Monday...

Raffle

The raffle colour for January is red. Bring along contributions for the bags and don't forget to see Janette for your tickets. We're planning to give a bit more recognition to the bag makers in future so if you're decorating a raffle bag, get ready for some much-deserved praise.

Book Review

The Golden Thread by Kassia St Clair

This got a mention on the blog a few months' back but it's worth mentioning again because it really is a superb book for anyone interested in an accessible history of textiles.

It's set up in tiny well-written chapters which make it good for dipping into and it's packed with surprising fabric facts from cave dwellers right up to 2018, taking in Egyptians and Vikings and English sheep along the way. There's a chapter on 'white, fluffy gold' which turns out not to be gold at all but rather the lucrative wool production of 14th century England and in a separate chapter we discover what happened when a silkworm's cocoon dropped into a young queen's cup of tea.

It is a slightly dense read and you have to rely on the internet for illustrations because there aren't any pictures but it is definitely worth a look.

The hardback is only £6.99 on Amazon and, it has to be said, this book has a beautiful cover!

And finally...

Saving the best until last, take a look at these beautiful ruby squares, butterflies and rabbits from the young embroiderers at Avoncroft. What a great collection. Thank you to Ruth Dugdale for the pictures and all her hard work.
