OUR FIRST
SESSION
The first session was successful, from the leaders’ point of view
and (from the parents’ feedback) the children enjoyed it too. We started by
developing the running stitch first learnt at the taster session with youngster
being given a sample of fabric (Binca) and a chart to follow. Each time they
will be receive another piece of fabric on which to practice the new stitches.
The samplers can be collected and sewn together to form a booklet or saved in a
scrapbook/sketchbook (approx 7’ X 7’or 5’ X 7’ – from The Works). It would be
useful if the children could bring along next time, a plastic wallet or ziplock
bag. They were shown an example of a button down A5 wallet, purchased from
Poundland, or they could use something similar in which to transport their
‘homework’.

MATERIALS
We’ve had enquiries from parents requesting details of materials
used at the first session. Here is a summary of our reply:
1. Six count
aida also known as binca - various sizes and colours from Amazon. A 25cm x 30cm
piece is typically £3.30.
2. Needles from Amazon
Tapestry needles are blunt and good for aida/binca.
Chenille needles are pointed (and sharp) so pierce woven fabric.
We recommend Chenille rather than
Embroidery needles, as the eyes are larger
John James company produce 'pebble needles' - assorted sizes in a
plastic case. These are good quality and
as the children get better at threading they can move to ones with
smaller eyes
3. Threads - six stranded cotton thread, separated into two groups
of three strands which is a good thickness for stitching. Anchor or DMC are
both good makes but you could buy a pack of unbranded threads of assorted
colours from Amazon or the Works.
Last week Aldi had a variety of cheap sewing supplies which might
still be available.
