Forthcoming Workshops with vacant places
12 May “Kantha” with Judith Rowley
This workshop will explore the world of
Kantha, a traditional Bangladeshi technique of recycling old fabric to create new. We will
produce a small wall hanging, creating a fabric base and embellishing with
Kantha Stitching.
We will look at the historical and cultural context for Kantha and explore its
potential in contemporary textile art Projects in 2D and 3D.
Judith will bring a selection of
Indian cotton fabrics at £1.50.
You will need to bring: tacking cotton, short darning needles, a
selection of embroidery threads, fabric, scissors, pins and notebook and
pencil.
Judith is a textile artist who creates textural and tactile surfaces
from natural fabrics and fibres which are bonded to create bases for “painting”
with hand and machine stitch.
She is an
active member of Prism Textiles an independent international exhibiting group.
Closer to home she exhibits with Midlands Textile Forum, Birmingham Art Circle
and Textile Connection..
14 July - “Coastal Relic” with Nicky Dillerstone
Taking the beach and coastline as inspiration you will create a free
standing stitched and embellished 3D artwork.
Working in a palette of silvers, grey, creams and pale blues the
emphasis will be on fine layers and textures. You will firstly create a layered
fabric piece rich with stitching/beading and found objects. From that we will
create a 3D curved shape with a range of wires and further layered stitching.
Other
found objects such as shells and driftwood can be incorporated in the piece but
this is optional. The stitching can be achieved by hand or on the machine.
Galvanised wire will be used to create the curved shape.
Requirements – working within the colour spectrum you will need a range of threads;
small amounts of fine fabrics,
wools, cotton lawn, linen, silks, mohair, knitted pieces; beads, shells,
driftwood: wire, wire cutters, round nosed pliers: needles, pins (long are
best), scissors and about half a meter of muslin and hessian.
Nicky’s work shows her obsession with fabric and threads that has been
constant in her life since she was very small. She makes sculptural nests and
pods that can live in your house or garden quite happily, they are made from
wire, wool, fabric, beads and whatever comes to hand that is weatherproof. This
workshop explores the latest direction in her work based on coastal themes.
This is a new workshop for both Nicky and ourselves.

September - “A Silk Ribbon Monogram” with Tanya Haines of The Common Thread
This is a
kit based workshop, with the monogram and ribbons of your choice.
This project is a lovely introduction to the stitches used in silk
ribbon embroidery. You will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety
of stitches and discover how these stitches can be used to form a number of
different flowers. Then, using what you have learnt, you will choose which
flowers you would like to embroider on your monogram.
Tanya will sell a basic kit at £12.50 and you will need to purchase some
silk ribbons (up to 3) to complete your chosen design which will take the total
kit cost to around £19.50.
The silk Ribbon Monograms are stitched on silk dupion using hand painted
silk ribbons. The technique requires the malleability of silk ribbons, other
fibres will not be as successful.
You will be asked to choose your Monogram letter a month before the
workshop so Tanya can have them printed on the cloth.
Tanya
grew up in South Africa and has been stitching and knitting since childhood,
but it wasn’t until she moved to England in 1993 that a whole new world of
needlework, and all that it had to offer, opened up to her. She is a hand
embroiderer and has been designing and teaching traditional hand embroidery for
over 23 years. She started teaching at the Woburn School of Needlework in 1994.
When the owner retired she started the Bedfordshire School of Needlework, which
has now become The Common Thread’s School of Needlework. Over the years she has
designed pieces in order to teach students the traditional forms of Drawn and
Pulled Thread work, Hardanger, Casalguidi and Reticello, as well as Silk Ribbon
Embroidery and Stumpwork.
The cost for each
workshop is £45.
