Regional Day

Thanks to Leamington for a great Regional Day, our final regional day before we host the 2016 event.

Our speakers were both interesting and entertaining, in the morning we heard from Professor Giorgio Riello from Warwick University.  He told of his his day working on the Sewing Bee with Claudia Winkleman, as a none TV owner he knew little about the show or Claudia but greatly enjoyed the day spent recording. Giorgio has written a book 'Cotton: The Fabric that Made the Modern World'. This was a fascinating journey through the history of how cotton came, relatively recently to Europe and it's impact on our dress as well household use and as a decorative fabric.

The afternoon Madeira Lecture was from Nicola Jarvis from the Royal School of Needlework.  Nicola explained the process of Goldwork, techniques and materials used.  We saw fabulous pictures of Goldwork designs from the past and present both in fashion and ecclesiastical garments.  The two speakers bought the history and modern day together.
