Saturday 2nd May - news round up

Hi everyone

For inspiration this week take a look at this video of Alex Vincent Turner, a recent Embroiderers' Guild Graduate. Alex specialises in personalised hand embroidery and slow sustainable fashion, and one of his current activities is a Map Series using old Ordnance Survey maps to create quilted landscapes and coasters. You can just get a glimpse of Wolverhampton in the coasters here and there's a full set of Birmingham in the next picture!

Coasters are on sale now in Alex's on line shop.

From the archive

Talking of maps, it will be great when we can finally get out and about. For now, here's a few lovely examples from our own archive: (If your recognise your own, give me a shout and I can give you full credit!)

NEC Festival of Quilts

You will probably have heard by now that the Quilt show will not take place this year and will be postponed to 2021.  šŸ˜¢šŸ˜¢
See the Festival of Quilts website for details of the new dates and information about ticket refunds/transfers.
Even if you are not a quilter, there is plenty of interest on the site: check out the details of the Fine Art Textile award, which is not just limited to quilters but includes any 'gallery standard' textile art. Deadline closes 2nd June.

And finally

It was a pleasure to find some unexpected embroidery in today's Guardian newspaper   which showcased the work of needle painter Victoria Rose Richards in a beautifully illustrated slideshow. Victoria creates needle-painted  landscapes influenced by the Devonshire countryside where she grew up and  gets her inspiration from aerial views of Google Earth. That's something we could all try from the comfort of our own homes! I'm going now to give it a try!

Speak soon.

Bye for now
