Christmas Party

Head for Hats

First things first: let’s congratulate Marion Plumb on a beautifully illustrated and entertaining talk. It would be fair to say that there was a lot of enthusiastic interest in the topic; Marion’s hand-crafted hats were the object of a lot of happy hat-modelling at the end of the evening.

Christmas Competition

The Christmas competition produced a flurry of classy entries:

And here's Meriel with the winning entry. Congratulations, Meriel.

Christmas presents

Congratulations must also go to Liz Fossey for suggesting and organising the Christmas bran-tub. Not only did we have a gift to take away but we were able to offer gifts for women stitchers who won't have much this Christmas. Thanks Liz.

Out and about

Earlier in the year Alice Kettle put in a request for people to send her embroidered trees. Her request was persuasive and I almost had a go myself. It turns out that 4,000 people did spring into action and the results of the Stitch a Tree project are now on display  at the Whitworth gallery in Manchester. Those trees have come from all over the world and the forest is still growing.

Also at the Whitworth, in their current exhibition of Islamic textiles, is this beautiful 18th century Turkish towel, embroidered with silk and metal thread.

And finally:

Not especially Christmassy but perhaps looking ahead to thriftier times:
